A prayer for Mary
Prayer is a force that not only helps bring us closer to God, but also to bring us closer to each other. It is an important part of one's spirituality, and can be found across religious worldwide. The purpose of prayer is to help connect us with those we feel are of spiritual importance to us. Prayer, therefore, is often deeply meaningful and moving. There are a great deal of prayers across different religions that speak to these spiritual loved ones. One individual who has a large number of important prayers devoted to her is the Virgin Mary, the holy mother of Jesus. This article will examine some of the common or popular prayers dedicated to Mary. There are a number of well-known prayers dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Hail Mary, which is also known as the Ave Maria. It is a traditional Catholic prayer that prays to Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is used as the basis for the Catholic Rosary, where ten Hail Marys are spoken for every Our Father prayer. However, it is a relatively new prayer, being incorporated into the rosary during the 1600s. This is in part due to changes in the church at that time that saw the growing importance of the role of the Virgin Mary. The Hail Mary prayer is not only used by Catholics, but also some Orthodox faiths, and in the Lutheran and some Anglican traditions. The prayer has its origins in the Gospel of St Luke. A number of other prayers to the Virgin Mary can be found in a book written by St Alphonsus Liguri. This book is known as The Glories of Mary, and contains a variety of devotions and prayers to Mary. One of the most important Virgin Mary prayers contained within it is the Salve Regina. This translates to Hail Holy Queen. This prayer is sung from Trinity Saturday until before Advent. It is also used as the final prayer in the rosary. It was written in Latin, and is traditionally sung in that language, although English versions are also common. The hymn is traditionally used by the Catholic Church, but has become less commonly used as more vernacular hymns have become popular in its place. One other important prayer is the Magnificat, which is composed by the Virgin Mary herself. It was spoken by Mary during her visitation to her sister Elizabeth, after her sister praises her for her faith. It can be found in full in the Gospel of St Luke. It is a canticle that is frequently sung at church services, most frequently during the Liturgy of the Housrs, and within evening vespers. It has also been set to music composed by well-known and classical composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, and Vivaldi and Rachmaninov. |
